The Purge

The year is 2022, crime is down to only 1% and once a year, for 12 hours called The Purge, you can freely commit a crime and not be held responsible, the police, fire and ambulance services will not respond and it’s a free for all.

James Sandin (Ethan Hawke) sells security systems and lives with his wife (Lena Headey), daughter and son in a cosy secure estate in America. Where they are safe from the yearly 12 hours, but are they!

Shortly after The Purge has commenced, a stranger is begging for help and James’ son Charlie (Max Burkholder) lets him in to the family home, shortly after a gang of masked Purgers arrive demanding he comes out for them to complete their Purge.

What we basically have here is a “home invasion” movie with a slight twist on the genre, it’s certainly an interesting idea of the 12 hour slot and what could happen.

The film isn’t what you would call fast paced, but it did have me gripped, yes there is am little bit of violence in the film, but it does have a 15 rating, so it’s not all that bad.

I think with any concept such as this one, it’s hard to bring in a balance of the violence and the storyline, the premise of The Purge is interesting, but that’s about it and it’s certainly not for the faint of heart.

Usually if you’ve seen one home invasion film, you’ve seen them all, but the film does make good use of some the camera shots and the atmosphere of being in a locked down house with a decision of do you give the stranger over to save you family or do you save the stranger.

Overall Thoughts For The Purge

Personally I quite enjoyed The Purge, it isn’t anything that will have people raving over, but it did have me gripped, thinking who was going to survive, how are they going to survive and then, if I was in that predicament, what would I do!
